Volvo BM DR631 Articulated Hauler

The DR631 is the very first series-produced articulated hauler in the world, with the quaint Swedish name of "Grus Kalle" (The Gravel Charlie). The 1:50th scale model from Motorart is the second in a series of historic model replicas, following the previously released Volvo BM H10 wheel loader.

Once again, it is presented in a wooden box with hinged lid and metal band with a clasp and, while a plastic base is provided, the model is not secured to it.

On initial inspection, the model stands up to the simplistic but functional aspects of the original, with two hinged engine covers opening to reveal the painted engine block within.

The articulation joint has rotational movement but the steering angle is almost nonexistent with only a very small range of movement and the large front wheels have quite a bit of movement rather than being fixed which results in wobbly rotation.

The rear tipping body appears to have a limited range of dump movement, certainly not enough to successfully tip a load although images on the internet appear to show it will actually tip to a higher angle, so maybe this is only an issue with the review sample. The cylinders are to scale and look rather delicate.

The cabin has a modelled interior and the exterior has fine scale rear view mirrors fitted along with a photo-etch mesh screen protecting the rear window. The paint finish is even and allows the surface casting details to show through and overall, it is a nice addition to the Volvo model fleet, although it has a rather high RRP in contrast to other similar sized models.
