Liebherr R936 + Adjustable Boom + MSD3000 Shear

When it comes to models, most excavators are commissioned in the standard mono boom configuration, especially tracked machines and yet the OEMs usually offer optional boom configurations to match the main requirements of the job at hand. Refo-Tech has produced several boom conversion kits including two-piece adjustable booms for the Liebherr R916 and R936.

Reviewed here is the kit designed for the Liebherr R936 from NZG, supplied with the main resin boom sections and parts needed to build the hydraulic cylinder and ram. All other parts are taken from the base model. Unfortunately, no Liebherr decals are supplied so these need to be sourced from elsewhere to complete the conversion.

While the addition of the cylinder parts works well, for this conversion, I have chosen to use a spare hydraulic cylinder to power the adjustable boom, as pictured below. I have also used metal rivets for a more professional look.

To further enhance the replica, I have added raised hydraulic piping to the boom with flexible hoses and metal ferules also added for extra realism. The paint finish is authentic Liebherr construction yellow which is a close match to the NZG original model.

Rather than fit the original stick and bucket, I have chosen to connect a LaBounty MSD3000 scrap shear to create something a little different. The shear kit is one I have had in my parts box for several years and was originally cast by Gaz.
