Kamag 2700 Series Slag Pot Carrier

For the steel industry, Kamag have a range of products including the 2700 series slag pot transporter which is available as either 2 or 3 axle configuration with carrying capacities up to 120 ton. The demands of the steel industry require a robust and capable machine and the 2703-100 measures over 13 metres long, 5.5 metres wide and 4.5 metres tall, tipping the scales at 86 ton. Powered by a 405hp diesel engine, the vehicle is essentially a skip truck on steroids, capable of lifting and carrying slag pots from 18 to 25 cubic metres in capacity which weigh around 100 ton. The design of the rear arms keeps the tilting point as far away from the vehicle as possible with a tilting actuator built into the arms to allow complete tipping of the pot, ensuring it is fully emptied.

Tonkin Replicas Europe has developed a limited edition release in 1:50th scale of the 2703 series deck loading transporter which is produced from high quality resin and photo-etch materials, displayed on a deluxe presentation plinth with acrylic dust cover.

The model has articulating steering with the front module housing the engine and access to the cabin area which has a full width protective canopy with a replicated cabin interior complete with controls and operator’s seat.

Exterior cab detailing includes painted window seals and authentic scaled grab rails with rear view mirrors mounted to the corners of the overhanging canopy.

The sides of the chassis have photo-etched panels simulating the hydraulic lines to power the lifting equipment and this works well.

The lifting arms are smooth in operation although there is not much friction, so the arms will just about hold position when empty but with the loaded slag pot, they are unable to hold the additional weight.

Intricate etched plates are fitted below the platform on the sides and rear to simulate the protective chains that prevent damage to the tyres.

The in-built tipping system is fully functional, with pins locking the pot into the cradle so the full tipping action can be demonstrated. The slag pot accurately captures the shape and form with no noticeable casting lines which is impressive and is also fairly heavy considering it is produced from resin.

Only 250 pieces have been produced of this rather unusual transporter which explains the relatively high price although the presentation is top notch. The paint finish is to a good standard with printed Kamag markings on the sides, front and rear.
