JCB Midi CX Centremount Backhoe Loader
The versatility of the Midi CX will appeal to a wide audience with its 50hp Tier 3 compliant, naturally aspirated 4-cylinder engine and hydrostatic transmission with four wheel drive and automatic limited slip differential to perform on the most arduous of underfoot conditions. The ability to remove the backhoe digging assembly to reveal a three point linkage and PTO allows the machines to be used for additional duties, perfect for landscaping contractors and local authorities.
It is not surprising that JCB have chosen to have a 1:35th scale replica of the Midi CX produced and the results from Joal are impressive. The model is manufactured in China and is available in two configurations with the US style centre-mount (pictured here) and European style side-shift version both available. The front loader arms lift to a good height with a functional bucket linkage and quick coupler, allowing the four-in-one bucket to be removed. The pivoting front axle has working steering which achieves a very tight turning radius.
The backhoe boom, stick and bucket have a good range of movement with a quick coupler allowing the bucket to be removed. This offers the possibility for third party attachments. Interestingly, the centremount version of the model has a different control system with levers operating the backhoe functions whereas the side-shift version of the model has the new joystick control system.

The entire rear backhoe frame can be disconnected from the chassis, just like the full sized machine which is one of the benefits of the Midi CX design, allowing it to be used with various other rear attachments. |

The king post is fixed centrally with fold down stabilisers, complete with pivoting pads which are just about stiff enough to raise the rear wheels off the ground. The review sample displayed here has the stick hydraulic mounted upside down. This error has been corrected on the production models |
The cab interior has been modelled well with the side console populated with printed dials and controls while the central steering console is topped with steering wheel. There are replicated foot controls and a fixed seat which has the JCB logo printed across the back.
Plastic grab rails have been added to each side of the cab which have integrated rear view mirrors and front facing driving and indicator lights. The cab casting has some good detailing including the door hinge brackets and handle while the roof has an amber beacon and integrated front and rear facing lights.
The paint finish is good with crisp printing of the JCB logos and markings. The model has taken a long time to be released but Joal have done a good job in replicating the Midi CX and both versions are a good addition to the growing 1:53th scale JCB model range.
