Caterpillar 16M Motor Grader

Classic Construction Models are well known for their highly detailed Caterpillar series and the 16M grader is another example of the excellent work converting data and photos into a work of art. The casting of the zinc parts is to a high standard with crisp lines and an even paint finish that allows the surface engraving detail to be seen.

The engine housing has photo-etch side panels allowing glimpses of the interior engine components with metal grab rails fitted around the engine cover while the rear has a seven-shank ripper assembly which can be lowered to the ground. The hydraulic cylinder is fitted with flexible hoses with silver valves which look great.

The rear bogies have oscillation and are fitted with rubber tyres that have a detailed tread pattern with silver used to highlight the bolt heads on the wheel hubs. The front and rear frames feature articulating steering which has a fairly good range of movement and is solid in construction. The front axle is designed to steer and oscillate with hydraulics used to mimic the angular adjustment of the wheels although this is not really functional on the model but certainly looks good.

CCM go the extra mile when it comes to fine detailing and the internal cabin layout has been accurately modelled, with opening doors allowing the interior to be viewed. The light beige coloured interior contours are offset by the black seat with joystick controls integrated into the armrests. Access ladders are fitted to both sides of the cabin with metal arms extending from the frame that hold the rear view mirrors.

The blade of the grader is mounted to the moldboard to allow both tilting and sliding movement and this works very well, with a small hydraulic behind the blade and an actuator allowing side slide movement. The rotation of the moldboard is functional with the main hydraulics allowing the entire assembly to be raised while there is also some angular adjustment of the mouldboard but this is rather limited.

The hydraulic hoses and distribution blocks for the various feeds really add to the realism and small details, like highlighting bolt heads with silver paint helps to bring the model to life. The packaging for the model is solid and a serialised specification booklet is included which provides some technical information on the 16M grader.

When the model was first announced, it was highlighted with a full safety package including side platforms, walkways and access ladders at the rear and it will be interesting to see if CCM ever release a mining spec version of the 16M in the future.
