Caterpillar 340D L Tracked Excavator

Presented here is the Caterpillar 340D L tracked excavator in 1:50th scale that has been produced by Tonkin Replicas. It is an interesting choice as their first excavator under the Cat brand, especially as it is so close in size to the 336D model from Norscot.

The final results are interesting, with a solidly constructed model with good replication of the boom, stick and bucket geometry although unlike the offering from Norscot, there is no quick coupler so removal of the bucket needs the pins drilling out. Flexible hydraulic lines have been added with raised piping fitted to the boom for added realism.

The individually linked dual grouser metal tracks rotate well, fitted to track frames which have surface engraving of the lower roller detailing. The 360 degree rotating upper carriage sits quite high with a large gap between the underside and the tracks which appears to be due to the undercarriage also being used for the 568 log loader and general forestry machines.

The cabin has a modelled interior in a grey finish highlighting the driver seat and joystick controls and interestingly, the lower section of the front window is metal which appears to be am oversight as it should be clear glazing. That aside, the paint finish is even with authentic placement of the Cat logos and markings.
