Caterpillar 983B Tracked Loader

Caterpillar 983B Track Loader

Presented here are the Caterpillar 983B track loaders from Classic Construction Models which have been produced in 1:48th scale as part of their "Historic Models" series. The 983B Track-Type Loader was introduced in 1978 and was the largest track loader produced by Caterpillar so far, producing 275 flywheel horsepower from its six-cylinder, 3406 diesel engine and featuring new pedal steering to free the operator's hands for the transmission and loader controls. Fast cycle times were achieved by the automatic bucket control system, allowing the bucket to rise to a pre-set dumping height and return to a pre-set digging angle.

The tracks are individually linked with tensioned idler wheels although they do not rotate particularly smoothly. All the lower roller detailing is integrated into the track frame casting with a toothed drive strocket and tensioned idler wheels.

The rear is fitted with a ballast plate and towing connection with a straight edged toothed bucket.Hydraulic hoses are fitted to the bucket tip cylinders for added realism and this really adds to the model.

The second version of the loader has a fully enclosed cabin with a light brown finished interior with all the levers visible with opening doors on both sides, one a full door and the other the top half, allowing a good view within.

An integrated air conditioner is incorporated into the roof with lines running down the rear while all the windows have printed rubber seals.

The front loader arms rise to a fairly good height with an authentically detailed rock bucket with upper spill guard and angled cutting edge fitted.

To the rear, a five shank ripper frame is attached with a single hydraulic operating the movement and all five ripper shanks loosely fitted at two different heights. Both versions are great additions to the growing historic Caterpillar range from CCM.
