Caterpillar 24M Grader

Caterpillar 24M Grader

Presented here is the Caterpillar 24M mining grader in 1:50th scale from Norscot. The model is an update to the previously released 24H and features new castings and additional detailing. The most noticable difference is the new safety features with walkways added to both sides of the cab.

The plastic walkways have a grill pattern moulded into the floor with accurately scaled plastic handrails running along the edges. Access to the cab is from the rear of the machine with a catwalk integrated into the rear wheel cover on each side.

The cab doors are hinged and open to reveal the replicated interior. The cab frame has integrated rear view mirrors with front and rear facing work lights integrated into the roof with an amber beacon fixed to the rear. Windscreen wipers are fitted front and back  with the Caterpillar name printed across the top of the window.

The rear body is a new shape with crisply cast panel detailing on both sides, complimented with fine printed grill details. More grab rails are fitted along the upper edges of the engine compartment with small lights fitted along one side of the housing to light up the access path for the operator.

Large rear facing work lights extend from the sides with small painted lights added to the rear radiator grill which has a ridged pattern.

The rear ripper unit has good ripper shank detailing with flexible hydraulic piping and a smooth up and down motion while the large tyres have a moulded block tread design.

The tyres are larger in diameter than the ones fitted to the 24H model with improved wheel hubs that show the bolt fixing details nicely. The rear wheels are mounted to the pivoting chain drive assembly which demonstrates the suspension system found on the machine.

The front of the model features fully working suspension and steering which accurately captures the details of the full sized machine. The steering hydraulics offer a good amount of movement while the pivoting frame simulates the range of suspension very well.

Even the small cylinders that control the pitch of the wheel have been added although the movement is very limited. The yellow painted hydraulic piping is another nice touch, as are the painted pin heads.

The blade assembly is fully functional, featuring up,down, left and right movement of the blade assembly. The blade itself can be tilted, rotated and also extended from side to side.

The addition of the hydraulic hoses gives even more realism to the model with a modelled slew motor on the moldboard and painted rivet heads.

The main frame is a new casting with small work lights extending out from the sides and a different contour of the side panels towards the front.

This is a very good upgrade to the original model with more fine detailing and replicated safety features. I think the model looks more aggressive than the 24H and the black anti-reflective paint scheme looks good. The paint finish throughout is great with crisp printing of the Cat logos, although the 24M designation is printed at a strange angle of 15-20 degrees where on the full sized machine, this is horizontal.
