1:50th Scale Bauer BG40 Drilling Rig

Presented here is the 1:50th scale Bauer BG40 Drilling Rig with Kelly drilling equipment from Bymo, the third model to feature the BG40 carrier showing the versatility of the design for a multitude of drilling tasks. This time, the model is supplied with a drilling bucket and Kelly bar replacing the CFA auger of the original.

The undercarriage features extending track frames which have good cast detailing with access steps and structural detailing present. The individually linked track pads look realistic and rotate smoothly.

The cab is highly detailed inside and out with the computer screen visible within, as are all the controls whilst the exterior has grab handles, rear view mirrors and a folding walkway along the side of the cab with roof mounted work lights and black highlighted window seals for added effect.

The body casting has plenty of detail including a removable counterweight which is another nice addition, especially if the model is posed for transport. Fine detailing found on the model helps to accentuate the realism further with textured walkways, hydraulic pipework and intricate grill detailing cast into the sides.

The drill mast is metal and can be dismantled like the real machine, allowing it to be shown in a transport configuration. The hydraulic cylinders are finely detailed and are nice and stiff, allowing it to hold position fine. An auxiliary winch is fixed to the back of the mast along with the Kelly winch while the main winch is housed within the body, using a key to operate to position the drill motor sled.

The rotary motor has a working platform with etched walkway and access ladders are fitted to the side of the boom. The top of the boom is adjustable like the real machine and the drill motor slides easily along the mast.

The drilling bucket and Kelly bar are plastic but almost everything else is diecast which adds greatly to the model

The bucket is fixed to the kelly bar with a screw and because the bottom of the bucket is hinged, allowing it to open to gain access to the inside, it is possible to detach the bucket.

While not functional, the detail of the drilling bucket is well done with nice tooth replication and the simulated mechanism used to trigger the opening of the bottom door
