Liebherr R920 Compact Tracked Excavator

A new addition to the Liebherr tracked excavator range is the R920 Compact, a machine weighing between 18750 and 21900kg depending on track and blade options. It is powered by a Liebherr D924 A7-04 4-cylinder diesel engine delivering 150hp with a SCR exhaust gas treatment to conform to Tier 4f emission regulations. The compact dimensions of the machine make it ideal for urban applications on confined job sites while still packing a punch in terms of power and performance with bucket options from 0.3m3 to 0.95m3 capacity. A number of boom and stick options are available including monoboom, two-part boom and offset booms. The full sized cabin offers a safe and spacious workspace with air conditioning, air suspended seat and high resolution 7” colour touchscreen.

Every new diecast model from Liebherr is eagerly anticipated and Conrad has once again done a good job of realising a 1:50th scale model of the R920 Compact, configured with a bladed undercarriage and monoboom.

The X-pattern undercarriage track frame castings incorporate the lower roller detailing and twin upper rollers with individually linked triple grouser metal tracks fitted. The blade is a nice addition and has a good range of height adjustment.

The body casting has all the indented panel lines with printing used to highlight the various handles and lock catches with both side and rear camera housings modelled. The rear counterweight has recessed lights that have red painted lenses with the raised Liebherr logo.

The upper engine area is a combination of grey plastic covers with silver highlighting along with the hydraulic distribution block and flexible hydraulic lines.

The cabin has safety grab rails fixed to the exterior along with an aerial and roof window with printing used to simulate the window seals. A self fit safety mirror is included in the box and clips onto the safety rail. The interior has a plastic moulding for the main components, as is typical of a Conrad model with interior panelling, side display console and controls incorporated and visible through the slightly tinted windows.

The digging equipment is modelled on a 5m Mono boom and this has a very realistic range of movement with the hydraulic cylinders incorporating raised pipe detailing with both flexible hoses and silver finished fixed pipe work found on the back of the boom.

Usually, new models are supplied with a standard digging bucket so it is refreshing to see a brand new tilting wide ditch cleaning bucket fitted to the model. It connects with the quick coupler and the tilting movement is fairly stiff, so it will hold in position.

What is especially nice is that the quick coupler is the exact same dimensions as the coupler fitted to the A920, R922 and R926 Compact, allowing the existing toothed bucket and clamshell grab from these models to be fitted on the R920 Compact, as seen below.

The paint covering is evenly applied and allows the fine surface engraving to be seen with printed Liebherr logos and machine designation flawlessly applied. The model is available from the Liebherr online shop
