Volvo L220G Wheeled Loader

Presented here is the 1:50th scale Volvo L220G wheel loader from MotorArt Collectable Models. The model is an update to the previously released L220E with brand new castings and looks rather good, although still has several small issues.

The L220G weighs in at around 32 t and carries the same engine as the L250G, generating 373hp. Ideal for a range of applications including material and waste handling, recycling, log handling and quarrying work, the machine can be fitted with a range of buckets and log handling equipment.

The newly designed electronically opening engine hood gives easy access for servicing and cleaning and this has been authentically replicated on the model, with the internal engine bay filled with a fully modelled and decorated engine block, exhaust silencer box and cooling systems.

All safety railings are produced from metal which is great to see with photo-etched access steps leading up to the cabin on both sides of the chassis.

Inside the Volvo “Care Cab”, the driver’s seat with integral armrests dominates with a ridged seat back and central control console complete with steering wheel. The dark colouring of the interior contrasts with the yellow exterior which has authentically scaled grab rails and front screen wipers fitted.

Colouring of the cabin frame is a little off when compared to the original machine with the front frames finished in yellow rather than the dark grey of the original.

The articulating chassis has a rather limited range of steering movement which does not match the full sized machine while steering hydraulics and drive-train are replicated. The rear axle oscillates and there is some movement on the front axle which is unclear if this is intentional or not.

The front digging equipment consists of a general purpose material bucket and Torque Parallel linkage with the loader arms lifting to a very authentic height although the bucket tip angle is poor, unable to correctly simulate tipping and this is disappointing considering the model looks very impressive with plenty of fine detailing. The paint finish is of a very good standard with an even coating allowing all the casting details to be seen while printing of the side engine grills and Volvo markings are crisp and legible.
