Volvo EW160C Wheeled ExcavatorPresented here is the 1:50th scale Volvo EW160C wheeled excavator from NZG. NZG have produced a number of Volvo models in the past, including the EW160 and updated EW160B. While these models were produced in the standard configuration, the "C" version is modelled as a material handler with high rise cab and sorting grapple attachment. The rear counterweight shape has been captured well with the contours and integrated lifting eyes all present. The reflective strips on each side of the couterweight are printed on with small safety labels located on the top corners of the counterweight for added realism. The undercarriage consists of a blade at one end with two fold down outriggers at the other, complete with pivoting pads. The blade can be adjusted and has a metal plate covering the hydraulic cylinders which pivots as the blade linkage moves. The double style tyres have an authentic moulded tread pattern and are fitted to yellow wheel hubs with grey painted centres with working steering of the front axle. The hydraulics on the outriggers and blade are stiff enough to allow the model to be posed with the wheels raised off the ground. The elevating cab linkage works very well achieving an impressive height and remaining horizontal through the full range of movement. Flexible hydraulic hoses have been added to the rear frame of the cab riser and the cab exterior has a radio aerial and amber beacon fitted, with the simulated black rubber window seals painted on the windows. The cab interior has not been missed with the driver's seat, steering column, complete with steering wheel and joystick controls all replicated and visible through the slightly tinted windows. The video screen display has also been added within, as has the front windscreen wiper and rear view mirror which is integrated into the grab rail.
The body casting has detailed cooling grill vents and access steps leading to the upper deck, complete with textured anti-slip surfaces whilst the metal safety rail is accurately scaled and has an integrated rear view mirror. The paint finish is excellent and the shade of grey and yellow more closely matches the corporate Volvo colours than some of the recent Motorart releases which tend to be a different colour with each model released. The model is encased in a two piece clear plastic holder which is very effective in protecting the model. This is inserted into an open front and top, stiff printed cardboard box allowing the model to be seen within. The EW160C is a great addition to the Volvo model fleet and also shows the progression through the series from the original EW160. |
