Volvo EC20C Mini Excavator

Presented here is the tiny 1:50th scale Volvo EC20C mini excavator from NZG. Firstly, NZG have to be congratulated for even trying to produce such a small model in 1:50th scale. The results are outstanding with all the details of the full sized machine captured very well in the diminutive model presented here.

The body shape has been very nicely modelled with cooling grill texture on the side and corner panels actually cast into the model and highlighted with black paint. The ridged engine cover has the Volvo name and diagonal silver line authentically placed with red strips on both sides of the engine panel

The cab interior has been included and is visible through the tinted windows. The black seat, joystick controls and front track control levers are all present and it is great to see for a model so tiny. The exterior cab detailing is exceptional with rear view mirrors, front work lights with silver painted lenses, black paint highlighting of the rubber window seals and an amber beacon and radio antenna all fitted. There is even a metal grab rail mounted to the cab frame.

The range of movement of the boom, stick and bucket is quite stunning and NZG have done a great job in engineering the linkages to allow the authentic movement. The three toothed bucket looks good with flexible hydraulic auxiliary hosing fitted to the stick and painted pin heads to enhance the realism. The offset king post works well, allowing the boom to be angled left or right of the centreline (As pictured below).

The undercarriage features small rubber band tracks with an accurate tread pattern moulded onto the outer surfaces which do rotate although are very tight. The small blade does offer a little up/down movement and is relatively stiff.

The paint finish is excellent throughout with accurate highlighting of grill panels and crisp markings. The model is packaged in a two piece clear plastic holder which protects the model well. This is inserted into an open front printed cardboard box. The picture below shows the EC20C alongside the ECR48C tracked excavator from Motorart, demonstrating the tiny dimensions of the EC20C.
