Sennebogen 690HD Lattice Crawler Crane

Sennebogen 690HD Dragline

The Sennebogen 690HD crawler lattice crane has been released in two different configurations, one as a foundation machine with diaphragm wall grab and, as reviewed here, in dragline configuration. Both versions are produced by ROS in 1:50th scale and have different boom configurations and work tools while sharing the same main body, undercarriage and cabin castings.

The undercarriage is nicely engineered with functionally extending track frames, each fitted with linked metal track pads.

The track frames have good structural casting details along with four silver finished access steps and authentic markings.

The upper structure rotates through 360 degrees with non removable ballast plates modelled on the rear, complete with small safety chains. The engraved chevron pattern on each plate has been done very well.

The main lift cylinders, complete with chains are partly functional on the model, rising up to simulate the operation of raising the ballast plates. The chains are a little over scale but the added detailing is good to see.

The A-frame has a single piece brass pulley fitted so there is a fair bit of resistance on the rope, requiring force to be applied to the A-frame in order to lower the mast.

One great feature on the model are the three working winches which are located in the heart of the upper works, with a removable side panel hiding the holes for the winding keys which cleverly click into holders within the compartment, keeping them from getting lost.

The winches have a smooth operation and it is possible to simulate the complete load/dump cycle, clipping the cover back in place once finished.

For dragline operation, a fairlead is mounted between the uppercarriage and lattice mast that houses two rotating pulleys and non functional rollers which are incorporated into the casting. An auxiliary winch has also been fitted to the underside of the mast.

The crane mast is constructed of a single piece so it is not possible to dismantle the crane to display in a transport configuration and this is a real shame.

Half way along the boom is a raised set of pulleys to prevent the rope from excessive movement and a silver finished platform runs along the entire length of the mast, complete with a textured surface.

The mast tip has a dual metal main pulley painted green while the smaller rear pulley is unpainted. Small bars have been fitted to prevent the rope jumping off the pulleys and the model is supplied fully rigged and ready to display.

Plastic panels with a crisply printed Sennebogen logo are fitted to the tip of the mast

The cabin has a modelled interior which looks authentic, while safety railings are located around the upper edge of the engine housing. Unfortunately, the railings are plastic and rather flexible so they are a little out of shape. The same can be said for the ladder leading up to the upper works.

A platform is fitted to the side of the cabin to aid safe access for the operator with rear view mirrors, wipers and a highlighted door handle adding to the realism. The side body panels are clearly defined with small handles and tiny printed safety and warning labels which look good.

The drag bucket is a nice size and fairly heavy with large drainage holes in the sides and rear. The chain links are a touch over-scale but don’t look out of place.
