Sandvik UJ440i Mobile Crusher Unit

Sandvik UJ440i

Presented here is the Sandvik UJ440i mobile crushing unit in 1:50th scale from Conrad. The UJ440i is available in three different versions depending on the material being crushed and the "Comfort" variant is detailed here. The CJ412 jaw crusher at the heart of the chassis has an opening of 1200mm x 800mm and is driven by V-belts and hydraulic coupling from the 408hp Volvo TAD 1252 Tier 3 diesel engine. The crusher is fed from the 1.2 metre SW1253 grizzly feeder with 6 cubic metre hopper and the unit is capable of processing up to 600 metric tonne per hour.

Out of the box, the model is supplied with several components which need fitting together including the natural fines conveyor and fixing wires, hammer and boom system, inspection platform and floodlight bar. Full colour instructions are supplied detailing how to connect the components to the base model.

The hopper floor and sides are lined with flexible rubber, simulating the actual wear protection fitted to the full sized machines which help in absorbing impact and noise.

The inspection platform fits above the jaw crusher with integrated access steps and enclosed front protection panel and safety railings.

The main discharge conveyor casting features structural frame detailing with a single piece, flexible rubber belt travelling along the entire length of the conveyor.

The conveyor features an enclosed upper surface with dust collector housing and the discharge height can be adjusted by inserting the plastic pins into one of the four holes in the chassis.

The natural fines conveyor can be fitted to either side of the chassis with the base of the conveyor connecting into the rotating mechanism mounted beneath the hopper and four wire ropes used to secure the conveyor. On the sample reviewed here, when using all 4 ropes to secure the conveyor as detailed in the instructions, three remain tensioned while the fourth is loose and does not look right. As shown in the image above, the model looks much better only using two of the wire ropes in a criss cross pattern.

The track frames have good cast detailing of the lower roller wheels with plastic track bands fitted. I have to admit that the use of plastic tracks is a little surprising considering many manufacturers are now producing replicas of tracked machines with authentic linked metal tracks

The tracks have triple grouser detailing moulded into each pad and they do look fairly realistic.

The main chassis frame has some good, crisp casting details and the model itself is very heavy and well engineered, one of the trademarks of a Conrad model.

One nice addition with the model is the hydraulic hammer and boom system, modelled on the BB1425 boom and BR927 breaker which really gives the crusher a more intersting look when fitted.

The range of movement of the boom is very good with a full 360 degree rotation allowing the hammer to be posed in the throat of the jaw crusher or stretched out over the engine and along the side of the conveyor when not in use.

Access steps leading up to the powerpack and crusher are integrated into the side of the chassis with accurately scaled grab rails added for a little extra realism.

The angular engine housing has been replicated with a textured silver cooling grill and floodlight and signal post, complete with painted red, blue and yellow lenses and silver floodlight lenses.

The internal jaw plates of the crusher have an authentic textured pattern on the wear surfaces whilst the jaw frame has some very crisp structural casting detail.

Sandvik UJ440i

Until recently, there have not been many crusher models produced so the release of the UJ440i is a welcomed addition to anyone's collection, especially considering the shear size of the crusher unit. The level of detail and engineering is crisp and clean, as is expected from Conrad and the weight of the model is substantial. The option to fit / remove the NF conveyor and hammer system is a nice touch and gives the collector more choice on how they want to display it. This model, along with the other three models in the series are now available to purchase from the Sandvik online shop.
