Poclain TY45 Wheeled Shovel Excavator

Poclain TY45 Shovel

Presented here is the latest addition to the Poclain Heritage collection, a 1:50th scale shovel version of the TY45 wheeled excavator from Conrad. The first Poclain TY45 was unveiled in 1961 and went on to be sold in more than 120 countries in numerous different configurations.

Weighing about 10 Ton, the machine had a 4 cylinder air cooled diesel engine generating 48 h.p. While the other Poclain models had special packaging indicating they were part of the heritage collection, the TY45 shovel is presented in the standard blue Conrad box.

The undercarriage houses the two main drive wheels at one end of the chassis and the steering wheels are mounted at a slight angle at the opposite end of the chassis. The stabilisers are functional and can be lowered to their working position with a ladder integrated into the side of the chassis for access to the upper deck. The side panel engraving is crisply cast while the wheel centres have raised fixing bolt detailing.

The boom arrangement has been configured for shovel operation with a clever parallelogram linkage powering the stick into the material. The shovel tip cylinder in incorporated into the lower shovel mount casting for protection and achieves a fairly accurate range of movement. The shovel itself has good structural detailing on the inside with shaped teeth on the angled cutting edge.

The rear of the upper structure is cast with open grills and allows you to see the engine block inside with highlighted engine panel lines and flexible hydraulic hoses added.

The cab controls and operators seat have been reproduced and the cab door can be opened.

While this model might not be every collectors cup of tee, the shovel version of the TY45 was an important machine in the Poclain lineup and complements the other produced versions, rounding off the TY45 range very nicely.

To demonstrate how versatile this machine was, versions of the model have been produced with a lattice crane boom and a material handling boom configuration with clamshell on a truck chassis while tracked versions of the backhoe have also been released.

I would not be surprised to see the shovel arrangement reviewed here mounted to the TC45 tracked undercarriage in the future while different cab colour variations are also possible.
