Mecalac 12MTX Multi-Purpose Excavator

Mecalac 12MTX

When the first Mecalac Multi-purpose excavator model came to the market, I could not help but marvel at the interesting design concepts of the boom geometry and undercarriage design with an articulated chassis combined with a 360 degree rotating upper carriage. While the model was presented in an unusual scale for construction equipment, the addition of three different attachments and a display case really set the model off.

My hopes of a 1:50th scale version of this unusual and fairly unique machine increased when Conrad released the 714 Mecalac model as both the MC tracked and MW wheeled versions which featured the multi-component boom design coupled with the ability to perform a range of tasks including that of a wheel loader, an excavator and a fork lift truck. Since then, the 8MCR tracked machine appeared as a model but there was still no sign of the 12MTX, that is until now.

Launched at the beginning of 2015, the latest version of the company’s flagship machine has undergone some technological and aesthetic changes, offering many improvements including greater safety, flexibility, functionality, responsiveness and greater ergonomics. With a weight of 9.7 tonnes, the 12MTX is powered by an 80kW Deutz 4-cylinder TDC 3.6 stage IIIB (Tier 4i) turbo diesel engine with an impressive 32km/h travel speed and a more simplified 4-mode control system with each mode tailored for the type of task being undertaken. It is no surprise that Mecalac has chosen to commission a model of this new beast and the result from Conrad is certainly impressive.

As with the other Mecalac models from Conrad, the engineering that has gone into the model is exacting, with the new style boom geometry authentically captured, from the movement of each individual boom section to the good angle adjustment of the offset boom allowing trenching in very tight spaces.

The undercarriage has articulating steering with the rear engine housing capturing the new aesthetics of the latest release, complete with protective frame while the front of the machine has a pair of adjustable stabilisers with large pivoting pads to keep the model stable. A driveshaft is fitted to the underside with an oscillating rear axle and wide floatation tyres are fitted to the wheel hubs.

The cabin interior consists of a fairly simplistic plastic moulding with clear glazed windows allowing the interior to be clearly seen. Printing is used to highlight the window markings and seals while the overall paint finish is expertly applied with small markings for the Mecalac name and machine designation.

Three work tools are provided in the box allowing configuration as a loader, excavator or handler and while at first glance, these appear to be the same castings as those for the MC714 / MW714, they are slightly different, showing true attention to detail by Conrad.
