Presented here is the JCB JS220LR "Long Reach" tracked excavator from Motorart in 1:50th scale. The model is an update of the original JS220 with a new long reach ditch cleaning boom, commonly known as a river rig setup.

So how does the model compare to the previous JS220 model, for a start, the undercarriage now has supperb individually linked metal tracks with bolt and pad detail. The cab is new and has a roof mounted window which was missed on the standard JS220 model. The main difference is the long reach boom which is a very welcomed change and I believe this is the first mass produced model with such a boom although there are several after market long reach boom kits for converting standard excavator models.

The only dissapointment on the model is the undersized bucket which really does look wrong on an otherwise fantastic release. It appears that the bucket drawings sent to Motorart were incorrect and even though several collectors voiced concern after seeing the prototype model, it was too late to have it changed. I can only hope that a new larger bucket is added on the next production batch.

The body casting detail consists of engine grills, panel handles, fuel outlet and raised walkway grip pattern. The hand rails are well proportioned and while made of plastic, they look better than the handrails on most Norscot models.

The engine compartment is accessible by opening the top engine cover, revealing the JCB engine and associated components.

The operators cab has been faithfully reproduced with lights, windscreen wipers and even an aerial mounted on the rear roof. Inside the cab, there are plenty of details including foot pedals, track movement levers and hydraulic cutoff lever. The seat even has the JCB logo printed on it which is a nice touch.

The boom and stick are fully enclosed and are assembled with the use of grip pins. The boom has flexible hydraulic pipework added which gives the model a much more realistic look. The cylinders themselves are not too stiff but there is enough resistance to be able to position the model as desired although the boom is a little heavy and may gradually lower. Another nice addition is the transport bar which can be rotated down to link the boom and stick together. There is also a protection block on the back of the stick to protect against damage when in  the fully lowered position just like the real machine.

The paint finish of the model is supperb, as is now expected from Motorart. The markings are very crisp and help to make the model stand out. All the markings are accurately produced and finish off the model well.

Conclusion - The JS220LR from Motorart is a great addition to the JCB lineup. Collectors have been waiting a long time for 1:50th scale JCB models to be released and each one is better and more detailed than the last. There are now several after market addons for the range of JCB models including bucket sets for the 3CX (pictured above), JS220 and a larger grading bucket for the JS220LR (pictured below).
