JCB 3C Mk3 Backhoe Loader

JCB 3C Mk3

Presented here is the 1:32nd scale JCB 3C Mk3 backhoe loader model which has been produced by Britains. It is clear that the model has been produced as a toy rather than a collector model from the 3+ rating on the packaging however, there are some very nice touches which mean it will not look out of place in anyone's collection and is a must for JCB enthusiasts.

The rear backhoe arm, stick and bucket have a very good range of movement with the king post authentically mounted to the rear frame which includes non-functional stabiliser jacks. It smoothly slides from side to side and the hydraulics are fairly stiff, allowing it to hold the chosen pose.

The cabin has been modelled well with a replicated interior highlighting the various levers and controls, topped with the classic black and red seat. The exterior of the cabin has black highlighted window seals and printed windscreen wipers with orange painted indicator lights and a silver exhaust all present.

While the model looks good, it is a shame that Tomy did not paint the various rivets used to join all the moving parts together, as their size and silver appearance does make them stand out.

The rear bucket has been modelled on the grab bucket design and while non-functional, it is an interesting choice.

Fine detailing is also present on the wheels which have very good printing of the wheel hubs and fixing bolts while the tyres have a solid moulded tread pattern. The front axle is also pivoting and features working steering although the range of movement is a little limited.

The front bucket is modelled on a 6-in-1 clam design although it is again non functional which is a shame as this would have really improved the model from a collector point of view. The loader arms raise to a reasonable height while the bucket does tip fairly well.

The paint finish is very good throughout with the raised JCB logos highlightetd with black printing, capturing the authentic shape and design of the period. All in all, this is a very good release of a vintage JCB backhoe which was first produced in 1977 and outsold all other manufacturers during the time it was in production. It is also the first time JCB have arranged a press event at their company headquarters to launch a scale model.
