1:50th Scale John Deere 959K Tracked Feller Buncher
Presented here is the 1:50th scale John Deere 959K tracked feller buncher from Ertl. This is another interesting addition to the John Deere forestry fleet and has some good detailing. The hydraulically adjustable linkage to the upper structure has a good degree of pivoting movement allowing the model to be realistically posed to demonstrate the hill climbing abilities of the machine and this is a nice addition on the model.

The undercarriage track frames are fairly basic castings with some detailing visible and yet the addition of the linked metal tracks really makes the undercarriage look good. The tracks rotate freely and have bolt and grouser detailing on each pad which adds to the level of realism. The highly detailed, plastic feller buncher head features rotating motion with about 100 degrees to each side of central with four folding grapples and a large silver cutting disc with contoured teeth. The back of the boom has a rubber covering to protect the hydraulic lines with stiff hydraulic cylinders allowing the model to be posed as required. |
One of the nice features on the model are the two opening side engine covers that reveal the engine cooling system whilst the entire main engine housing pivots to the side to reveal the modelled powerplant within, complete with fire extinguishing system. This is one of the "High Detail" series of models and the opening doors really do add to the overall appeal of the model.

The accurately shaped cab is a nice touch on the model with large glass windows allowing a good view of the basic interior with the frame showing the structural bolt detailing with roof mounted floodlight housings with printed lenses. The roof window has been painted on with a printed mesh pattern which detracts a little from the overall appearance of the model. |

The model is assembled with large, silver headed rivets which does detract a little as they look oversized. It could be argued that the fixing bolts should be silver, to match those fitted to the full sized machine but on the model, these actually spoil the appearance a little, although they can be painted over with satin black paint to reduce their impact.
The 959K is a good companion to the recently released 909K tracked feller buncher and 843K Wheeled feller buncher and all three are great additions to the growing John Deere forestry range. The model is supplied with a Deere forestry DVD which features footage of the range of forestry machines and this is a very nice addition and interesting viewing for all those with a keen interest in forestry equipment.
