Volvo FH with Nooteboom Step Frame Trailer & Thwaites Dumper
"J & M Murdoch & Sons Decoration"

J&M Murdoch & Sons have been in operation since 1965 and provide a range of services in the transport and waste disposal / recycling sectors. The 1:50th scale model reviewed here features the Volvo FH prime mover with 3-axle Nooteboom extending step frame trailer and Thwaites site dumper load in the J & M Murdoch & Sons company decoration from Corgi.

The Nooteboom step frame trailer is one of two different trailers that have been produced by Corgi recently and it has a reasonable level of detail and functionality. Corgi have never been known for producing models that are highly detailed and fully functional and their strength is in the paint and decoration that goes into the model along with the selection of companies that are well known across the UK. The 3-axle Volvo FH prime mover does have some nice casting detail on the cab and chassis although the front axle is fixed so there is no functional steering which is a pity, as this would add realism to the model.

The tyres have a moulded tread pattern and detailed wheel hubs with fenders fitted over the rear wheels. The chromed exhaust behind the cab has a very intricate pattern cast into the surface which looks great and the coiled service lines have been added to the model for added realism. There are amber beacons, chromed air horns and a light bar fitted to the cab roof and there are holes in the cab frame where the rear view mirrors need fixing.

The chassis features a large silver finished fuel tank with integrated access steps cast into the front surface along with a textured upper walkway. There is also a photo-etch step on each side of the cab which is a nice addition. The most striking feature is the authentic and accurate paint and decal scheme on the model which really brings it to life, from the large name print on the sides to the tiny writing and logos. Even the door handle lock has been highlighted, showing the attention to detail Corgi add to the decoration of each model.

The front of the trailer has a storage area with a single spare wheel and holes in the frame where the service lines can be connected. The extending bed of the trailer has been replicated with cast side supports and tie-down detailing with simulated wooded panels on the upper deck. Plastic ramps are supplied with the model allowing the load to be realistically posed at the front of the trailer and this is a nice addition to the model. The trailer deck above the wheels features an accurate diamond plate texture which has been highlighted in silver and gives a good contrast to the red frame.

The rear of the trailer features full sized ramps which are hydraulically operated and have accurate safety warning markings on the rear with simulated wooden panels on the front surfaces, complete with diamond plate textured ramp tips. The wheels have a reasonable amount of detail with tread pattern and red hub centres along with black plastic mud guards with printed Nooteboom logo. The trailer frame casting is rather basic with no suspension or steering of the axles as is now found on most trailer models from the likes of WSI, NZG, Conrad, Sword, TWH etc and this is one of the areas where Corgi need to improve to stay in touch.

The model is a good addition to the Corgi heavy haulage fleet with a striking red and white colour combination and accurate Thwaites load. For further details of the J & M Murdoch & Sons company, check out their website. The model is available to purchase from the Corgi Online Shop.
