Presented here is the 1:48th scale die-cast Caterpillar D9L with 631E towed scraper which has been produced by Classic Construction Models. The D9L was first introduced in 1980 and remains the most powerful of the D9 series with a Cat 3412 direct injection engine providing a power output of 460hp. It was also the first variation of the D9 series to use the elevated drive sprocket design to reduce the shock loads and strain on the final drives. In 1987, the D9N replaced the D8L while the 520hp D10N became the replacement for the D9L.

When configured as a tractor, the D9L has some subtle differences over the other versions including the omission of the front hydraulics and a new engine casting covering in the engine bay. The cabin shares the same casting as the standard version with opening doors revealing the interior detailing.

The fine mesh panels on each side of the engine compartment allow glimpses of the interior engine components to be seen. The track frames are fitted with a single upper roller frame while the rear has a pivoting towing structure, allowing the included 631E towed scraper to be connected, complete with hydraulic lines.

The 631E towed scraper shares a number of castings with the standard 631E motor scraper with a different design of gooseneck and a front steering axle incorporating the tow bar with smaller treaded tyres which appear to be fitted backwards although this is the standard fitting.

The bowl can be adjusted in height with an opening apron and working ejector plate, finished with flexible hoses and small modelled hydraulic check valves and blocks. The cylinders are fairly stiff so the model will hold the chosen position.
