Caterpillar 988 Wheel Loader

The Caterpillar 988 Wheel loader in 1:48th scale is manufactured by CCM and is the first release of a new series of highly detailed historic Caterpillar die-cast models. While better known for their all brass models, this is an interesting change from CCM and the first model is the legendary Cat 988 wheel loader.

The model is of all metal construction with high levels of detail including the fully replicated engine compartment with engine block, radiator and cooling fan all present. The rear photo-etched radiator grill looks good with rear facing light clusters added to the side of the engine bay and a protective frame integrated into the rear counterweight.

The operators station, complete with all hand and foot controls is visible through the clear windows of the cab which can be removed easily from the model which is a nice touch.

The cab itself has glazed windows with four lifting eyes cast into the roof and a front fitted windscreen wiper. Accurately scaled grab rails are fitted on both sides of the model with access steps leading up to the cab on one side.

The loader arms have a good range of movement and fully tipping bucket with authentic hydraulic hose details adding to the realism. The suspension on the rear wheels has been reproduced along with the floating rear fenders which actually raise up as the wheels come into contact.

The articulating chassis features a good amount of movement and the underside of the model has a detailed drivetrain from the front axle to the transfer box while the wheels have authentic looking rubber tyres with detailed wheelhubs.

The model is being made in a run of 2500 and is presented in a quality cardboard box with inner polystyrene protection for the model. A small run of a log loader version has also been produced.
