Caterpillar 793F Mining Truck Presented here is the updated 1:50th scale Caterpillar 793F mining truck from Norscot. The model features a new style cab which has a replicated interior with metal safety rails running around the upper deck and down the front of the model. Interestingly, there is a small access ladder at the rear of the upper deck leading down to the chassis and this is made of plastic.
The front grill has a very intricate and realistic texture with access steps fitted across the front of the model. The angular shape of the upper deck looks good with silver painted driving lights integrated into the lower bumper and black painted panels simulating the protective covers on the full sized truck. The dump body has been changed from previous versions, featuring the X Body design which has structural rib detailing on the outer walls and underside with a crisply cast patterned floor and protective wear plates which do look the part while simulated lifting eyes have been integrated into the top edges of the body The dump body can be raised and the two hydraulic pistons feature a two stage action allowing a very realistic angle of tip on the dump bed when it is fully raised. The cylinders are stiff so the bed can be positioned at any position chosen.
The underside of the model is reasonably detailed with a functional hydraulic steering system which allows the front wheels to turn to a decent angle. Unlike previous versions of the 793D, this version has an almost complete drivetrain with the replicated transmission housing and rear axle. The tyres fitted to the model have a satin finish which is less shiny that the tyres on the 797F and this adds to the appearance with a detailed tread pattern moulded into the tyres surface. This is another very welcome update reflecting the changes made to the full sized truck. The additional detailing over previous versions of the 793D are certainly welcome and the paint finish is very good with crisp printing of the Caterpillar logos. Interestingly, the first production run of the model had the dump body decals placed in a lower position to those on the sample reviewed here. |
