Caterpillar 587T Pipe Layer

Caterpillar 587T Pipe Layer

Presented here is the 1:48th scale die-cast 587T pipe layer from Classic Construction Models. The model is limited to only 1000 pieces and features some very fine details throughout.

The operator's area is highly detailed with accurate printed dials and switches on the central console. Warning and instruction labels have been added to the side panel next to the seat and all the hand and foot controls have been authentically replicated. This version of the model has an open cab with separate ROPS frame which needs fitting onto the model once unpacked. Small holes have been drilled into the main casting for the fitting of a fully enclosed cab but this version is not available to collectors.

The front engine grill has a fine etched pattern which fiully reveals the cooling fan, mounting frame and hydraulic motor within and this is a nice touch on the model. Accurately scaled metal grab rails have been added to both sides of the engine bay and the front bumper has a towing hitch with fixed pin.

The boom is fitted to the track frame and can be raised/lowered by rotating the winch with the supplied miniature screwdriver.

The rope is relatively thick and the pulleys appear to be very tight so actually raising / lowering the boom is not smooth and tension needs to be added by hand to allow the rope to move through the pulleys.

This is a little dissapointing on the model and the hook has a similar issue in that there are no pulleys so turning the winch does not allow the rope to easily move through the hook block so significant weight is needed on the hook to keep the rope tight.

The casting of the hook is very well done with opening catch and rear loop. All the rivets used to connect the boom and hook block have been touched up with paint which give a much better look of realism.

Access to the cab area is by the accurately scaled access ladder fitted to the track frame, complete with scaled grab rails and this adds to the realism of the model. The rear of the model features a towing hitch which has a pin fitted into position and the pin appears to be glued into place so cannot be removed easily.

The side mounted counterweight can be extended outwards which gives better stability and also gives access to the winches which are covered when the weights are up against the chassis. The paint finish on the model is very good with an even paint coating and good printing of the black chevrons and Caterpillar markings.

The metal tracks are individually linked with working spring tensioning of the idler wheel to keep the tracks tight to the frames. While the track links look great, the alignment of each segment is very poor in today's standards and are certainly not what you would expect from a company that specialise on exceptionally high quality. Considering the cost of this model, this is a major flaw in my opinion and does spoil what would otherwise be an exceptional model.

The casting is crisp with plenty of fine detailing throughout and the model is securely packed in a two section polystyrene lined quality cardboard box.
