1:50th Scale Bauer BG40 Drilling Rig

Bauer BG40 in Malcolm Livery

Presented here is the limited edition, 1:50th scale Bauer BG40 Drilling Rig in the Malcolm company livery from Bymo. The striking blue and white decoration gives the model a different look and this is one company livery which really does stand out on the shelf.

The model is an excellent replica with nicely detailed features throughout although there is a small difference compared to the original model in Bauer decoration. On the original version, there are flexible hydraulic hoses fitted from the housing to the main mast hydraulic cylinders which are not pressent on this version. Apart from that, the castings and detail appear to be the same as the original model.

The undercarriage features extending track frames which have good cast detailing with access steps and structural detailing present. The individually linked track pads look realistic and rotate smoothly.

The cab is highly detailed inside and out with the computer screen visible within, as are all the controls whilst the exterior has grab handles, rear view mirrors and a folding walkway along the side of the cab with roof mounted work lights and black highlighted window seals for added effect.

The drill boom is diecast and can be dismantled like the real machine. The continuous flight auger is plastic but almost everything else is diecast which adds greatly to the model.

The rotary motor has a working platform with etched walkway and access ladders are fitted to the side of the boom. The bolt fixing detail has been added on the motor assembly which really adds to the level of realism

The top of the mast is adjustable like the real machine and the drill motor and sledge slides easily along the mast. The hydraulic cylinders are finely detailed and are nice and stiff, allowing the mast to remain in position.

The base of the mast has another working platform with swing out auger cleaner which is a great touch on the model.

Out of the box, the model is in a number of parts and can be realistically positioned on the back of a low loader in transport configuration. There are detailed instructions to assemble the model which takes about 30-40 minutes. A key is provided which is inserted into the hole on the side of the model to operate the main winch. The two auxiliary winches are also functional but there is no resistance.

The extra detailing found on the model helps to accentuate the realism further with photo-etched engine panels, textured walkways, hydraulic pipework and intricate grill detailing cast into the sides.

The removable counterweight at the rear is a nice touch, as are the small amber beacons

The original Bauer version was, in my opinion the best foundation model produced at the time and the Malcolm decorated release is a very welcomed addition to the growing range of foundation models that are being produced. Despite the recent additions from Soilmec and NZG, the Bauer BG40 is still a favourite in my collection.
